Scuba Diving the Island of Oahu Twenty years ago I visited Oahu on a family vacation and tried scuba diving for the first time. From the minute I took my first breath underwater, I knew my life was going to change. Over the next 15 years, I made over 20 visits to Oahu, as well as to the other Hawaiian Islands, just to get beneath those clear, warm waters and explore another world. And when I decided to relocate to Hawaii five years ago, Oahu seemed the natural choice. With everything from plane crash sites to sunken ships, Oahu is the perfect island, if wreck diving is your thing. Highlights include the YO257 and Sea Tiger shipwrecks off famous Waikiki beach. Imagine heading down a descent line preceded by a squadron of Eagle Rays gliding over the bow of a 170 Foot shipwreck, and you start to get an idea of the spectacular wreck diving Oahu has to offer. In addition to almost daily Eagle Ray sightings, Hawaiian brown sting ray and whitetip reef shark also call these sites home, and the wrecks themselves serve as protection for Hawaii's many endemic fish species. On the East side of the island, about 20 minutes from Waikiki and two
miles offshore, lies Oahu's most famous wreck site, a perfectly
preserved WW II Corsair plane. Lying on a sandy bottom 107 feet below the
surface, the Corsair is completely intact and upright. When the huge
resident Moray eel isn't relaxing in the open cockpit, divers can crawl
in and take a seat. In addition to the wreck itself, the sandy bottom is
home to thousands of garden eels that sway rhythmically back and forth
like vines growing in an ocean garden. Whitetip reef sharks, stingrays,
large amber jacks, and jumbo eels also frequent this incredible underwater If wreck diving isn't your thing, no problem. Scuba diving in Oahu has something to offer just about any diver -- from shallow reef dives with Hawaii's green sea turtles, to wall dives, cave dives, drift dives and more. Oahu's underwater world is as diverse as it is beautiful. With its protected bays and shallow reefs, Oahu is also a great place to get certified or try scuba diving for the first time. Almost all the local dive companies offer certification courses, as well as introductory scuba dives for those who've never tried it before. No experience is required, just the desire. With its beautifully clear, tropical waters and diversity of dive sites, if you're not underwater you're missing out on much of the incredible wonder that is Hawaii. So grab your mask and fins -- and I'll see you down there! =================================================================== Maui Scuba Diving Maui’s best scuba diving is Molokini crater located about 20 minutes by fast boat off the coast of Maui has to be one of the best scuba diving sites in Hawaii and the world. It offers great snorkeling and scuba diving on the inside of the crater with over 100 different species of fish at depths that most free divers can get to, and with the visibility all most always in the 40 to 50 meter range you can see everything from the top making this a truly special place. We did our Maui scuba diving adventure with Ed Robinson's a little expensive but worth the money for the level of attention and overall quality of the experience For scuba divers the backside wall is awesome with the dive being done as a drift dive on most days. You can really get the feeling of clear water vertigo here when you are looking away from the wall for some of the big stuff that can come by like oceanic manta rays or turtles returning to the surface for some air. Before the first dive we sat on the boat looking over the side into the water and we could see the sharks circling on the bottom at almost 70 meters. As you are swimming on the wall you will see pyramid bluenose and reticulated butterfly’s which are not extremely rare but you really need to look for them in other places in Hawaii if you want to see them. White tip sharks hide out in hole in the wall. We were very fortunate that we witnessed for over10 minutes 2 oceanic manta rays getting cleaned by a school of tang these magnificent graceful creatures get to the be the size of Volkswagens and are fantastic to watch as they swoop and turn while feeding. After the dives at Molokini crater we went into the area around little Makena beach which is little more famous for being a nude beach, than a premier Hawaii scuba diving site and were rewarded with a find of a dragon moray, arguably the 2 second most beautiful eel behind the blue ribbon eel, which is not found in Hawaii. We saw many other things as well and this dive alone would be worth a dive trip with or without the nudists.
